When Should My Child Get an Eye Exam?

Many vision issues in kids can go undetected without a proper eye exam. Even if your child passes a school vision screening, it doesn’t always tell the whole story.

We recommend:

First comprehensive exam at around 4–5, or before starting school
Annually after age 6, to monitor vision changes as they grow

Earlier or more frequently if your child has risk factors like a family history of eye conditions, premature birth, or signs of vision trouble

What We Check for During Your Child’s Eye Exam

Our pediatric eye exams go beyond just reading the eye chart. We assess:

Visual acuity (how clearly your child sees)
Eye alignment and movement (to detect strabismus or lazy eye/amblyopia)
Refractive errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism)
Depth perception and focus flexibility
Eye health and internal structures

If a more complex issue is found, we’ll refer you to a trusted pediatric specialist or your family doctor for further care.
